We are supporting preservation efforts in Peru, and educating about what we have learned worldwide.
Planting Huachuma Our mission
The Sacred Valley has become the center of the world’s interest in this plant, and the cactus on those hillsides is a different species that carries far too little medicine for a ceremony. So what people drink there arrives by road from the regions of northern Peru where Huachuma grows wild, hundreds of kilometers away.
We are planting Huachuma in the valley itself, so that in time it can come from the ground it is used on.
Why We Plant
Huachuma grows across the Andes and has been used as medicine there for thousands of years. Most of what people drink still comes from wild stock in Peru.
A columnar cactus that is cut takes years to be replaced, so the useful thing to do is not complicated: plant more of it where it is being used, and start now.
Our Three Core Pillars
Preservation
We support preservation efforts in Peru at our garden in Taray, where several hundred Huachuma are in the ground and the terraces will hold five thousand. We are actively looking for other projects to support.
Education
We connect with leaders in the field and share what we know openly, in the podcast, in the resources and in Huachuma Wisdom. We consider ourselves students of this plant and of those who came before.
Community
We are cultivating a worldwide community of people who love this plant, want to grow, and want to connect. Huachuma Wisdom is where it gathers, once a month, online.
The Taray Preservation Garden In the Sacred Valley
A living sanctuary in the Sacred Valley of the Andes.
Several hundred cacti are already in the ground on a terraced hillside at Taray, and more go in as the terraces fill. Many of them carry a painted stone at the base with the name the plant was given.
Huachuma Wisdom Enrolling now
January 11 2027
A community of people who care about this plant, meeting online once a month for six months. The next season begins on January 11, 2027.
